The New Florida Energy Code 2015 Requirements: What You Need To Know

The Fifth Edition of the Florida Building Code came into effect on July 01, 2015. The new code is possibly the strictest in the country and focuses on improving energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings in Florida.

One of the key changes homeowners need to be aware of is that buildings must be 19% more energy efficient when completed compared to the previous building code requirements. This change affects new constructions or buildings that are undergoing significant additions. Repairs and replacements that affect over 30% of the assessed value of your home must adhere.

Another important change is the northern expansion of Climate Zone 1 to include the counties of Palm Beach, Lee, Hendry, and Collier in addition to Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe. Zone 1 has stricter requirements compared to the rest of Florida’s counties, which are all in Zone 2.

The new energy code changes are friendlier to the environment and easier on the consumer’s wallet. Higher standards for the performance of energy efficient windows and doors translates into more cost-savings for homeowners as they save money on utility costs throughout the year. Improved energy efficiency means less money spent on the cost of air conditioning in the summer and heating costs in the winter. The U.S. Department of Energy predicts that Florida building owners will save almost $720 million dollars a year by 2030 because of the new Florida Energy Code.

These new changes mean that some window and door products that met the standards prior to July 01, 2015 may no longer be up to code. Window and door businesses are busy training staff to become familiar with the new code and to introduce additional product lines that meet the higher standards the new code demands.

When shopping for replacement windows or doors, be sure to ask questions about how the products meet the new code. Be wary of disreputable companies that suggest that you do not have to meet these new standards. Failing to do so can result in fines and a lien placed upon your house.
